"The team chemistry is a lot better than it was last year. "We've only got 33 or 34 kids, but we've got a great group of kids, and they all fight hard for each other," he said. Gould's first year resulted in a 1-9 record and the Devildogs' 10th consecutive losing season.īut they began 2015 by beating Southside Christian 20-14, then rolled by Landrum 41-7 and then held on to defeat a solid Powdersville team 41-38.Īs Gould looked around at his players at practice one day earlier this week, he described the differences. "A small-town atmosphere like this is something I always thought about. "This is one of the main reasons why I left where I was, because I wanted to go somewhere where it was important, where it still meant something to the school and the community," Gould said. A Florida native, Gould arrived in June of 2014 and is in his second season as TR's coach. "People will be in the stands Friday night who don't necessarily know a kid on the field, but this is TR football so they want to come." "There's no place like it, except maybe Greer," said Cole, now the team's offensive coordinator. Cole knows how passionate Travelers Rest fans can be. With the way the Devildogs are playing, it should be quite a homecoming. It's the Peach Blossom AAA Region opener for both teams and TR's homecoming game. On Friday night, Travelers Rest, 3-0 for the first time since Cole and his teammates played in 1990, will host Chapman (2-1). The new stadium has much more room, but it still carries the name of Bolin, the school's winningest football coach, and a successful edition of the Devildogs can still fill it. The backs of both end zones had people - kids, adults - standing and watching because there weren't enough seats in the little, bitty stands. "The stands weren't very big on either side.
